|The material in this volume is taken from O.R. Cummings' research collection -- 40+ albums filled with 4000+ photographs, postcards, and maps -- on Maine's electric railways, which he donated to the New England Electric Railway Historical Society in 2008. O.R. Cummings also donated a 3-ring binder filled with 41 hand-drawn and colored maps created by Charles D. Heseltine in the 1970s, covering the early roots of public transit in Maine, including the early horse railroads, electric street railways, and electric interurban lines.|
O. R. Cummings was a long-time member of Seashore Trolley Museum and the historian of the New England Electric Railway Historical Society (NEERHS). He was responsible for writing and publishing more than fifty books related to railway systems, in particular, systems in New England.
For a number of years, prior to his death, O. R. worked closely with members of the Library Committee of the NEERHS/Seashore Trolley Museum. O.R. spent many, many hours explaining details of hundreds of images and hundreds, of his thousands, of his postcards of railway-related subjects.
